Electrical Distribution Grid Strengthening Activities: Design, Supervision and Monitoring in Benin

In a nutshell

The project reinforces and rehabilitates the existing electricity distribution system in and around Cotonou, and in the regional cities of Parakou, Natitingou, Djougou, and Porto Novo, including conducting the Environmental and Social Assessments (ESIAs) for this work. Works include:

  • Regional Grid Strengthening Activity:
    • New 161 kV infeed including switchgear and transformer, installation of a new 33 kV substation in Natitingou;
    • Modification and upgrade from 20 to 33 kV of some 120 km of rural OHL connections near Parakou;
    • Upgrade of existing 161 kV installations and of some 140 km of rural OHLs and associated transformers from 20 to 33 kV in the Djougou area;
    • New 63 kV connection, related switchgear modifications, upgrade of some 130 km of rural MV connections from 15 to 33 kV and replacement of associated transformers in the Porto Novo area;
    • General network improvements;
  • Cotonou Grid Strengthening Activity: new lines, new switchgears, new sub-stations and city network extension (63 kV connections and cable ring, 15 kV and LV connections, new 63 kV switchgear, new transformers 161/63/15 kV, etc.)
  • National Electricity Dispatch Activity: design and construction of a national distribution control centre and related design activities in the new substations of the other grid strengthening activities.

 

Our involvement

  • GOPA Intec carries out studies, provides the detailed design, supports in the elaboration of tender documents and technical specifications as well as contract award for 6 different lots
  • Design and installation of a distribution network data collection system in support of the independent evaluation works and of SBEE's operations
  • Installation, commissioning and capacity building, and then handing-over of the system
